As an employer and image consultant, nothing drives me crazier than when an applicant has terrible social media and are surprised they aren’t getting a callback.
News flash: employers are checking your social media. I don’t care if you think it’s right or not, it’s happening so get the heck over it!
Google can be your best friend if you’re on good behaviour when using social media! It can give an excellent impression of who you are and what your personal brand is all about! If you enjoy posting drunken pictures, photos of you doing illegal drugs or even half dressed photos, Google will remind you at every possible chance. Especially when it’s an employer checking.
I suggest everyone google themselves often and even more frequently if you use social media often. Even if you don’t post controversial things, you should still google yourself to see what comes up, especially if you have a common name. You may find that someone with the same name as you has a very different view than you do. This could cause an issue if an employer is googling you but hasn’t had the chance to meet in person, or perhaps they’re trying to fact check some of the things you said during an interview and this other Jane Smith is a total jerkface.
As an example I googled myself and this is what came up:
The first three items on the list are in fact me… the others are not! It’s also nice to see that the top three items are me and for someone who works on social media a lot, that could be an indication you’re doing something right!
I challenge you to google yourself and see what comes up! Can you handle the results?
Were you shocked by what you found?
