Networking Gets You the Job!

05/22/2017

It’s no surprise that with more people in the workforce, it can be tricky to navigate the job market. The reality is that more and more people are searching for their dream job with the same credentials as the next person. Having a college diploma or even a bachelor’s degree doesn’t always guarantee a wealth of job opportunities.  Don’t worry though, there is a light at the end of the dimly lit tunnel.

To set yourself up for continued career success,  your best opportunities will likely come from your network connections.

These are people you’ve met along the way that are in your industry or an industry that relates to yours, that you’ve added to your professional community.  These contacts may lead to direct connections, or remain acquaintances, but believe it or not, they are most likely to assist in your employment search. These employment saviours likely have nothing to lose by sending a recommendation your way. It’s also likely to be low risk for them if it doesn’t work out.

Our educational system has taught us that knowledge is power, and while in most cases that’s accurate, you have to get in the door in order to use this knowledge. A lot of times this can be the most complicated part of the process. The key to preventing this is to always be prepared for it, even when it isn’t an immediate need.

You never want to be networking when you need a position.

In fact, that’s when you want to be utilizing your resources. You should be networking and gaining resources before it becomes a need.  In addition, you should never “burn a bridge” so to speak. Even if your employer is a nightmare to deal with, always keep your head high and leave with your reputation intact. You never know who that person is connected to or how they may impact your employment in the future.

Lastly, do be kind to those in your network. If you know of a position that someone would be perfect for, mention it to them or better yet, offer to be a professional reference if you’re able to do so. Not only will this help them out in a time in need, but it could also come back to better your opportunities in the future.

December 27 2020 // There are two kinds of peopl December 27 2020 //

There are two kinds of people right now..
1. Those that are celebrating the successes of 2020, and making plans for 2021
2. Those that are just happy to make it out of 2020 alive, and are going to go into 2021 one day at a time.

Here’s the thing... neither of these things are right or wrong, they just are.

You are allowed to feel how you want to feel.
You are allowed to take things slow, or go at full speed into the year ahead.
You do you!

The only suggestion I’ll extend to you is this:
You see what it is you’re looking for. So make sure you’re looking for things, worth looking for.

Just a woman working late on her business, finishing up client stuff and enjoying a glass of wine!

Life is what you make it!
In February of 2019 I sat right on this very spot In February of 2019 I sat right on this very spot at the @cfchinookcentre and made a decision that changed my life.

I decided to quit my corporate job.

I called @leslie.l.martin to tell her my plans half expecting she would tell me I was crazy and ask for her help with some rebranding.

She backed me 100%.

The funny thing is that I really didn’t have a plan. I hadn’t talked anything through, I just knew that I couldn’t keep doing what I was doing.

I had completely forgotten this memory until I came here today and was flooded with all the emotion I felt that day.

Excitement. Fear. Gratitude. Passion. Self-doubt. Hope.

A year and a half later, I can tell you that was the best decision I’ve ever made.
This morning I was listening to @impacttheory podc This morning I was listening to @impacttheory podcast and @tombilyeu was interviewing @hilaryswank

She has a motto she lives by and I thought it was so worth sharing.

“ I have this motto. Make a choice, make it happen and work everyday towards whatever that goal is. Step into the sharp edges, do something that scares you, don’t pull away and don’t overthink.”

That is pure gold.

- read it again-

Make the choice of what you want, and then make it happen. Don’t change the goal, adjust the strategy and work towards making it happen every single day.
